It’s no secret that I pulled a total jerk move and decided to sign up for this bullshit called “Veganuary” where basically I torture myself by eating plant based things for an entire month. A month isn’t so bad you may say, and to that I say how about you try it then we can chat. This has been the longest 24 days of my life and while I feel the best I ever have, home girl needs some carcass.
Everyone knows I love a challenge, so when I was invited into the iconic Del Frisco’s Steakhouse in North Dallas last week, I just had to accept and see how they handled patrons with dietary restrictions. For anyone who has had to dine out while being limited on what they can eat, you know it’s tough. For those of you who haven’t been in that situation, stop being so selfish and hogging all the food.
Yall, it is no joke how great the service is here – no wonder DFS is considered one of Dallas’ top fine dining restaurants year after year. The staff at DFS was very aware of that I was vegan and not only did they offer suggestions of what I could safely eat but they even created a special entree so that I didn’t have to just stick to having a salad, which is the unfortunate situation at most restaurants.
Of course, I started out with their insanely delicious onion rings. Let’s face it – can you go wrong with onion rings? The onion rings at Del Frisco’s Steakhouse are some of the best I’ve ever had – I’m convinced they are battered with crack. There aren’t enough words in good ol’ Webster’s to describe these effectively so just take my word for it and shove your face with some ASAP.
Next up, the salad course. Aside from your Steakhouse staples, the Caesar and Wedge, they offer several other options and even nightly specials. I decided to go with the beefsteak tomato and onion salad which was not only stunningly beautiful, it was damn good as well. The produce was noticeably fresh and flavorful, just like you’d expect from a top tier restaurant. Sometimes less is more and that is definitely the case for this stunner.
I didn’t even have to struggle with trying to find something I could eat on the entree menu as our waitress had already informed the chef of my dietary needs and he offered to whip up something special. I’m telling you – this is the way to go, kids. My special entree was fucking amazing. Sure, it may resemble P.F. Chang’s lettuce wraps but don’t let your eyes fool you – these were stuffed with fresh shiitake mushrooms, peppers, toasted sesame seeds and an eel sauce-like drizzle. I could have eaten approximately 53.5 of these babies and even told the chef they should have this on their permanent menu.
Aside from Del Frisco’s Steakhouse being much more than just a beef serving, dark lit spot – they truly defy the odds and make it possible for people of all walks of life to enjoy a memorable meal. All in all, I was thrilled at my first experience here and I most definitely be back again and again. Maybe they’ll make an “OHD Special” so that everyone can enjoy the bad-ass vegan options they created for me, whether you’re doing Veganuary or not. Keep in mind that the entree I had is NOT on the regular menu but they do have a permanent gluten-free menu with so many options, you’ll never feel like you’re missing out.
